		<description>A college friend of mine majored in art history and gained some renown as an expert in medieval and renaissance clothing.  She assured me that underwear is a relatively recent development largely due to difficulty in making it.  They were very expensive because the process wasted a lot of cloth.

I have no insight what so ever into this, and am only offering this as hearsay.</description>
